Today’s virtual church, forced upon us by the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed us back in time to claim the future. DYK? Pondering the Pivot

It’s been eight weeks since we published our last print version of the Northern Illinois Conference Reporter. Even before the April edition went to press, a pandemic was declared and residents in Illinois were asked to “Stay at Home.” It quickly became clear that a monthly print communication would be eclipsed by rapidly developing events and more spontaneous communication was needed. With that reality, the NIC staff did a sharp pivot.

As I write this column, one of our pastoral families welcomed a first baby into their home. Others are burying a parent. Families are frantic for the well-being of loved ones separated from them by the novel coronavirus. Others are juggling homeschooling and entertaining rambunctious children.

In The United Methodist Church, we are led by a Council of Bishops. The United Methodist Council of Bishops consists of 66 active and all retired bishops who meet biannually to shepherd the work of the denomination. The Council is further divided into geographic areas: there are five jurisdictions in the U.S. and 20 episcopal areas outside the U.S.
