Saturday, October 15 from 9:00AM to 1:00PM at First United Methodist Church of Des Plaines, 668 Graceland Ave. Des Plaines IL 60016 This event is free and breakfast and lunch will be offered. This year we will also be celebrating the new class of licensed local pastors who have attending the Spanish Licensing School at Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary this summer. Our guest preacher will be President of Garrett Dr. Javier Viera. Our Guest Speaker is Paola Marquez, PhD student at Garrett.

Dr. Javier Viera was born in Puerto Rico and raised in Florida. He holds a degree from Florida Southern College, an M.Div. from Duke, and a doctorate in education from Columbia University. Javier’s interests range across the theological map – from inter-religious dialogue to pastoral leadership and homiletics, to the role of religion in modern Latin America. He is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church. Early in 2021, Dr. Viera was appointed as the new president of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, after six years as dean of Drew University’s Theological School.
El Dr. Javier Viera nació en Puerto Rico y creció en Florida. Tiene un título de Florida Southern College, un M.Div. de Duke, y un doctorado en educación de la Universidad de Columbia. Los intereses de Javier abarcan todo el mapa teológico, desde el diálogo interreligioso hasta el liderazgo pastoral y la homilética, hasta el papel de la religión en la América Latina moderna. Es un presbitero ordenado en la Iglesia Metodista Unida. A principios de 2021, el Dr. Viera fue nombrado nuevo presidente del Seminario Teológico Evangélico Garrett, después de seis años como decano de la Escuela Teológica de la Universidad Drew.
Paola Márquez is a first-year Ph.D. student at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Born in Colombia in a Caribbean city called Barranquilla, they have advocated for gender and LGBTQI rights and the church's role in peacekeeping and peacebuilding. Paola Márquez worked for many years for the headquarters of the Colombian Methodist Church as a coordinator, youth leader, translator, and volunteer in numerous church social and economic projects. Paola was a Wind of the Spirit community organizer in New Jersey. Currently, their research focuses is dismantling mestizaje from Latin American theologies; they are also founder and member of the activist initiative "El Té Caliente," which promotes human rights in the context of the work of the church.
Paola Márquez es estudiante de primer año de Ph.D. estudiante del Seminario Teológico Evangélico Garrett. Nacide en Colombia en una ciudad caribeña llamada Barranquilla, ha abogado por los derechos de género y LGBTQI y el papel de la iglesia en el mantenimiento y la consolidación de la paz. Paola Márquez trabajó durante muchos años para la sede de la Iglesia Metodista Colombiana como coordinadore, líder de jóvenes, traductore y voluntarie en numerosos proyectos sociales y económicos de la iglesia. Paola se ndesempeñó como organizadore comunitaria de Viento del Espíritu en New Jersey. Actualmente, su focos de investigación son el desmantelamiento del mestizaje de las teologías latinoamericanas; también es fundadore y miembro de la iniciativa activista "El Té Caliente", que promueve los derechos humanos en el contexto del trabajo de la iglesia.
