NIC Helps Change The World in 2012

05/21/2012
Many churches in the Northern Illinois Conference participated in the United Methodist Chruch's global movement to Change the World. People lived church in their communities - going out to serve, and personify the love of Christ.

Woodridge UMC participated in "Helping Our Environment" by volunteering at Woodridge Rotary Club Recycling Extravaganza, directing traffic, handing out flyers, and collecting items brought for recycling.

Marengo UMC sponsored "Support Our Park". In the weeks prior to May 19 work crews from the church performed a lot of repairs on the Park's main building, and on the picnic shelters in the park. Members and friends of Marengo UMC (aged 5 thru 85) swarmed Indian Oaks Park in Marengo on Saturday, and Sunday, May 19-20. Several crews painted the shelters which now look neat and inviting. A Demolition crew removed an outdoor stage that was in poor condition. Others put their chain saws to work cutting down dead and diseased trees, and then cutting them into manageable pieces. A crew cleared brush from along a path through the Park woods. CTW Marengo DigMany members made monetary donations to purchase plants which a team, working with the Park District Grounds Crew, planted around the entry to the Park District Building. Wood chips were spread on a playground for the Day Care Center the Marengo UMC will operate in the Park Building in the fall of 2012. Others pulled out weeds and lay down mulch. Some of the people who were not able to do the hard labor provided treats and cold water at the hydration station. It was two days of hard rewarding work and warm fellowship. Read more about it...

change Wesley UMC Aurora had a Community Picnic on Saturday, May 19 and then on Sunday, May 20 we went out into our neighborhood to serve our neighbors.  We did yard work for two elderly women, did yard work for the Aurora Historical Society, worked at the Marie Wilkinson Food pantry (both inside and outside), planted a tree at our partnership Elementary School, sang and visited at the neighborhood nursing home, and put together Health Kits and made greeting cards for service men and women.  People were able to sign up for the work they would like to do that day.  Over 50 people participated.
